Publications

The first publication emerging form the Dark Pasts research agenda is now out! You can find ‘Dark Trails: Animal Histories Beyond the Light of Day’, published in Environmental History in April 2022, here.

Further publications – including a piece on subterranean degenerations – from this body of work will appear very soon. Watch this space.

In the meantime, why not check out my first piece of writing about darkness. In my book, The Wild Within: Histories of a Landmark British Zoo, I consider the reproduction of the night in nocturnal houses. Bristol Zoo built the world’s first nocturnal exhibit in 1954, and continued to innovate in this respect into the 1990s. Twilight World is, alas, now closed as part of the Zoo’s relocation to a larger site outside of Bristol. See Chapter 2: Theaters of Animality.
